I'm guilty of these
May. 24th, 2012 | 01:10 am
If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a thousand times. I’m referring to a student’s writing a sentence like:
I went to see the movie, “Midnight in Paris” with my friend, Jessie.
Comma after “movie,” comma after “friend” and, sometimes, comma after “Paris” as well. None is correct — unless “Midnight in Paris” is the only movie in the world and Jessie is the writer’s only friend. Otherwise, the punctuation should be:
I went to see the movie “Midnight in Paris” with my friend Jessie.
If that seems wrong or weird or anything short of clearly right, bear with me a minute and take a look at another correct sentence:
I went to see Woody Allen’s latest movie, “Midnight in Paris,” with my oldest friend, Jessie.

You need a comma after “movie” because this and only this is Mr. Allen’s newest movie in theaters, and before “Jessie” because she and only she is the writer’s oldest friend.
The syntactical situation I’m talking about is identifier-name. The basic idea is that if the name (in the above example, “Jessie”) is the only thing in the world described by the identifier (“my oldest friend”), use a comma before the name (and after it as well, unless you’ve come to the end of the sentence). If not, don’t use any commas.
Grammatically, there are various ways of describing what’s going on. One helpful set of terms is essential vs. nonessential. When the identifier makes sense in the sentence by itself, then the name is nonessential and you use a comma before it. Otherwise, no comma. That explains an exception to the only-thing-in-the-world rule: when the words “a,” “an” or “some,” or a number, come before the description or identification of a name, use a comma.
A Bronx plumber, Stanley Ianella, bought the winning lottery ticket.
When an identifier describes a unique person or thing and is preceded by “the” or a possessive, use a comma:
Baseball’s home run leader, Barry Bonds, will be eligible for the Hall of Fame next year.
My son, John, is awesome. (If you have just one son.)
But withhold the comma if not unique:
My son John is awesome. (If you have more than one son.)
The artist David Hockney is a master of color.
The celebrated British artist David Hockney is a master of color.
And even
The gay, bespectacled, celebrated British artist David Hockney is a master of color.
(Why are there commas after “gay” and “bespectacled” but not “celebrated”? Because “celebrated” and “British” are different sorts of adjectives. The sentence would not work if “and” were placed between them, or if their order were reversed.)
If nothing comes before the identification, don’t use a comma:
The defense team was led by the attorney Harold Cullen.
No one seems to have a problem with the idea that if the identification comes after the name, it should always be surrounded by commas:
Steve Meyerson, a local merchant, gave the keynote address.
However, my students, at least, often wrongly omit a “the” or an “a” in sentences of this type:
Jill Meyers, sophomore, is president of the sorority.
To keep the commas, it needs to be:
Jill Meyers, a sophomore, is president of the sorority.

Though the Looking Glass: Jose Rizal
May. 24th, 2012 | 12:56 am
Manila Contemporary invites you to the opening of Though the Looking Glass: Jose Rizal on May 26, SATURDAY at 6pm.

June 2012 marks the end of Jose Rizal’s year-long birthday celebration. Last year, the entire nation has been paying tribute to the greatest advocate of nationalism and reform this country has ever-known, Jose Rizal. Every Filipino has followed the legacy of this Renaissance man over the last 150 years. Deeply ingrained into our collective memories, we recall the dramatic scene of how he turned to face his executioners after being shot by firing squad. We remember how he led resistance against Spanish colonizers, igniting the hearts of Filipinos everywhere with the bravery of a pen rather than a sword. Familiar tales of his childhood, his formative years as a student in Europe where he honed his nationalistic spirit and his personal relations with his family and lovers have been taught in to young minds all over the country. As nationalist, scientist, doctor, linguist, scholar, writer and artist, Rizal is put on a pedestal for his exceptional talents, his principles and the sophisticated path that he chose in spite of ominous circumstances.
This May, a month before it officially ends, Manila Contemporary attempts to reconstruct this tower by introducing our national hero on more relevant and relatable grounds, as a human being. Without discrediting his achievements, this exhibition intends to create a more rounded perspective of Rizal. Digging through layers upon layers of myth, artists are challenged to depict his nakedness as man. Taking into consideration his insecurities, fears and inclinations, we dive into the raw complexity of his person. To have overcome and used these aspects of his humanity for the greater good, only further intensifies the significant prominence that he has attained.
In the Upstairs Gallery, The Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (www.CANVAS.ph) will be exhibiting RIZALPABETO, a unique collaboration between poet Vim Nadera and artist Elmer Borlongan celebrating the life and legacy of Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal.
And as supplement to the show, Manila Contemporary will be hosting a talk by Michael Charleston “Xaoi” Chua of the De la Salle University and the Order of the Knights of Rizal, Sucesos Chapter on his essay “THE FIRST EMO: Simple Life Lessons from The Extraordinary Story of José Rizal” on the 9th of June 2012.
Manila Contemporary is located at Whitespace 2314, Chino Roces Avenue, Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.

Filippo Bettini, president of Premio Feronia and Philippine Ambassador Philippe Jones Lhuillier

EDIT:
A CAT Burglar has snatched $34 million in jewellery during a break-in at a Filipino diplomat's home in Paris.
Philippe Jones Lhuillier, the ambassador of the Philippines to Portugal and a passionate gem collector, was away when thieves struck at his apartment in the 16th district of Paris, Le Parisien newspaper reported.
The thieves, who broke in through a window, used an angle grinder to prise open a safe containing a case of gems and jewels, the report said.
Vases, watches and other valuables were also taken from the richly decorated 540-square-metre apartment, the report said.
Police are investigating the theft, which was reported by one of the ambassador's staff on Thursday.
Mr Lhuillier is the son of a former French honorary consul to the Philippines.
